## The teacher reads aloud and supports understanding of new words

The aim is to provide students with a wonderful reading experience while also continuing to work on words and expressions in the text.

Create a common word board where you can collect words from the book that are new and need to be investigated.

A word board can be on a wall in the classroom, and you can tape a frame to it to form a blackboard. The words are written on sticky notes that are placed in the frame so that students can see the words daily, savour them and be reminded of their meaning.

Prepare by reading through one chapter at a time and picking out words that you want students to clarify, i.e. words that you think are important to clarify.

### Implementation

- Read a chapter aloud to the students.
- Read the chapter again and stop at the words you have picked out. Write them down on slips of paper and fold them up.
- Start by sorting out a word together so they know how to use the strategy board.
- Pair up the students, and let each pair draw a note. It could be that each pair gets several notes to work out.

If you want, they can fill in the concept board that you can find[here!](https://teaching.lexplore.com/words-and-expressions-non-fiction?hsLang=en)
It can be helpful to show them how to use the concept board. Preferably with your ‘common word’
Gather the pupils and let them present their explanations of the words.
Put the words with an explanation on your wall board.
Do the same with the rest of the book!

Take time!

You can read one more chapter and stop at an unknown word. You can then work it out together.
