### **Reading log during your own reading - fiction**

In this exercise, Students learn how to use a reading log. By actively working with the log, students gain tools to reflect on what they read and practice summarizing, predicting, and understanding new words. You demonstrate by having a shorter story that you can write a joint log for.

**Here's how you can introduce students to the reading log:**

Explain that the reading log helps Students remember and think about what they read. Feel free to display the reading log on a large screen. Go through the headings of the reading log in order.

**What do you think the text will be about?**

Look at the cover of the book and discuss what Students think the book is about. Ask questions to help them think:

*What do we see in the picture?*

*What do you think the book is about, based on the title and the picture?*

*What type of book do you think this is?*

Ask them to make suggestions and fill in the text in the log.

**Write down the new words and expressions you find**
Read the text aloud to the students and pause at appropriate reading stops. During these stops, ask the Students to write down new words and expressions they come across.

When you have finished reading, collect the words and add them to the shared log.

**Write 2-3 questions. Try to come up with different types of questions.**

Together, you write down questions that the students come up with. Give them support if needed based on question words such as:

Who?

Which?

What?

How?

Why?

**After reading: Summarize what happened first, then, and last**

Summarize together in a few complete sentences. Conclude by having each student draw a picture that summarizes the content of the story.

### **Continuation**

Once Students have become confident in using the reading log, they can begin to work more independently with it while reading other books. It may be appropriate to work regularly with the reading log for a period of time so that students become accustomed to and master the method of summarizing text.
