Two-week reading Boost
Reading Boost (Key stage 1-2)
Two weeks of paired reading and book talk
Purpose
– To practise reading fluency and comprehension in a safe and structured way
– To build a sense of community and interest around books
– To develop spoken language and enjoyment of reading
Daily routine (approx. 30 minutes)
1. Paired reading (approx. 15 minutes)
Students sit in pairs and take turns reading aloud from the same book. Depending on their level, they can read a sentence, a page or a short passage each. Encourage pupils to support one another and read with expression.
2. Daily question (approx. 10–12 minutes)
After reading, the teacher reads out the daily discussion question. Students talk about the question with their reading partner. Remind them that there are no right or wrong answers – all thoughts are welcome.
3. Documentation (approx. 3–5 minutes)
Each pair draws or writes a brief response in their reading journal or on a class discussion card. This could be a picture, a word, a sentence or a quote from the book. Responses can be collected in a class folder or displayed on the wall.
Discussion support for students
– I think that...
– I feel that...
– I believe that...
– I agree because...
– I have a different idea...
The teacher can model a short paired discussion with a pupil before starting, using a short excerpt and a “think aloud” approach.
