# Pair reading a non-fiction text

## Pair reading a non-fiction text

Reading a text to acquire knowledge places great demands on pupils' decoding skills and reading fluency. It also requires them to understand the content.

Pupils can listen to a text in order to have the same conditions for understanding the content and learning the content.

As a teacher, you can also provide support by teaching them how to approach a non-fiction text in your subject. It is motivating for pupils to learn how to read in different ways when it is " for real".

#### Instructions

Take a text from the area you will be working on in your subject.

Choose whether the pupils will:

- Overview reading.
- Skim reading Intensive reading.
- Normal reading.
- Reading selectively.
- Close reading.

You read and model what you do when you use your chosen method.

- Divide pupils into pairs according to reading ability.
- Use the results of the assessment to help you.
- Have pupils take turns reading a text aloud to each other in the same way as you have just done.
- You can let the pupils continue to work in pairs when they read further in the work area and process the text together.
